Gear Maintenance & Care

Why Maintenance Matters

Outdoor gear is an investment, and taking proper care of it ensures you get the best performance, durability, and safety every time you head outside. Whether it’s a tent, a backpack, boots, or a sleeping system, a little care goes a long way. At BermGear, we help you protect your gear so it lasts through countless trails, trips, and adventures.

Caring for Your Gear

Backpacks & Hiking Packs

Clean your pack regularly with mild soap and warm water, especially after dusty or muddy hikes. Avoid harsh detergents as they can weaken the fabric and coatings. Let it air-dry completely before storing, and keep zippers lubricated for smooth, long-term use.

Tents & Shelter

Shake out dirt and debris after every trip. Spot-clean with gentle soap, and make sure the tent is fully dry before packing to prevent mold and odors. Store loosely in a breathable bag (not compressed). Check poles for cracks and inspect seams occasionally.

Sleeping Bags & Pads

Air out your sleeping bag after each use. For long trips, use a liner to reduce sweat buildup. Wash rarely, and only according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Store uncompressed in a large sack to maintain loft. Sleeping pads should be wiped clean and stored flat or rolled loosely.

Hiking Footwear

Remove dirt with a soft brush after hikes, especially around seams and laces. Let boots dry naturally, never on a radiator or direct heat source. Reapply waterproofing treatments as needed. Replace insoles and laces when worn.

Cooking Gear & Stoves

Clean cookware immediately after use to prevent residue buildup. Inspect stoves for clogging and always store fuel canisters separately. Check seals and valves often if you’re using gas systems.

Lighting & Electronics

Recharge or replace batteries before storing. Keep electronics dry and use cases when possible. Avoid exposing power banks and headlamps to extreme cold for long periods.

Storage Tips

  • Dry everything before putting it away — moisture is your gear’s worst enemy.
  • Avoid long-term compression, especially with sleeping bags and pads.
  • Keep gear organized in breathable bins or shelves, away from direct sunlight.
  • Inspect regularly for early signs of wear, loose stitching, or broken buckles.

When to Repair or Replace

Some wear is normal and many pieces can be fixed. If you notice torn mesh, broken clips, compromised waterproofing, or damaged poles, bring it in. The BermGear team can help with advice, minor fixes, and guidance on whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense.
